Harder scoring curve for moving duels
zxn
Suggestion:
Scoring curve for moving duels should be harder than a NM or NMPZ duel. This could be implemented by using a smaller 5K radius on moving maps, for example, using half of the current 5K radius instead.
Why:
- Motivates players to find the right city or do a better region guess in smaller countries, and discourages insta-sending.
- Speeds up games. In moving games, players will have more information and tend to get higher scores than NM or NMPZ, which leads to lower damages per round and long lasting games. A harder scoring will lead to more damage per round when both players' guesses are in the right country thus speeding up the game
Example
If the right location is Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the scoring with different 5K radius are listed below:
| Guessed location | distance | old score (150m 5K radius) | new score (75m 5K radius)
|----------------|--------|------|------|
| Paris | 0km | 5000 | 5000 |
| Creteil | 15km | 4951 | 4902 |
| Reims | 133km | 4575 | 4187 |
| Lyon | 395km | 3842 | 2952 |
| Berlin | 880km | 2781 | 1547 |
| Warsaw | 1370km | 2006 | 805 |
| Moscow | 2489km | 951 | 181 |
| Yekaterinburg | 3888km | 374 | 28 |
| Novosibirsk | 5256km | 150 | 5 |
What the new scoring curve leads to?
- More damage if a player knows the right city (Creteil vs Lyon, 1109 damage in old, 1950 damage in new). Knowing the right part of the country will be as useful as knowing which country it is.
- Less damage when both guesses are bad (Moscow vs Novosibirsk, 701 damage in old, 176 damage in new). Why bother judging which guess is less bad when both are on the wrong end of the continent?
- Almost no change to guesses in between (Berlin vs Warsaw, 775 damage in old, 742 damage in new)
Canadagraphs
Do you know WHY the 5K range is 150M? Because Google Maps is not pinpoint to the millimetre accurate. They have 150M to make room for error. While it is rare for there to is a 150M error, it is not rare for there to be a 50M error in more rural settings, which means if you get a long stretch of road with 1 house to go by, missing that by 26M & falling outside your 75M range, is not that hard.
Now, if you said for them to go back to the old 125M mark that they used to have. I'd say....maybe...but even then, a soft maybe.
When people sign up for a Moving match, they KNOW the game is going to be long. They arent joining expecting the game to be over in 2 mins like NMPZ adhd generation people do. I had a game just this week that went 17 rounds, with an average round time of 66 seconds. We didnt pick the mode because we were worried about the game taking too long. No moving player has ever gone in thinking "man, I hope this game is over in 3 mins, I have stuff to do".

Canadagraphs Smaller 5k radius itself is not a problem since almost all official country maps have a much smaller 5k radius (iirc around 20-30 meters). Though I'm not arguing 75m is the optimal choice, or even an optimal exists. It's more of a game balance decision.
The second point, the game should be faster in a sense that when a player is able to 5k while the other cannot, the player deals more damage and thus finishing up the game earlier. I don't expect time in each round to be shorter as player still need to gather information and aim for 5k.
