Rating Decay Should Use Weeks Instead of Days
Geoguessr is not a game that most people play every day. Many players only play on weekends or whenever they have free time. With the current system, players can start losing rating after just a few days of inactivity, even though their actual skill level has not changed.
Using weeks instead of days would still encourage players to stay active while preventing unnecessary rating loss for community members who simply cannot play every few days. It would also make ratings feel more reflective of player skill rather than activity frequency.
For example, the exact same decay values could be kept, but the unit could be changed from days to weeks:
- Week 1-2 > 0 decay/week
- Week 3-8 > 1 decay/week
- Week 9-16 > 3 decay/week
- Week 17-23 > 5 decay/week
- Week 24-30 > 7 decay/week
This would still remove inactive players from the top of the leaderboard over time, while being much fairer to players who only have time to play on weekends or occasionally throughout the month.

just get rid of it, its just for profit i can tell and its reallly frustrating when u come back from holiday and your rating is wrecked its not cool it makes it harder to progress

So true. I used to play a lot more, but these irrational changes are so frustrating I'm giving up on the game... they clearly started some new stage on their capital agenda that involves shoving a bunch of shit down our throats to get more money, but they forget that playing a game should feel freeing, not the opposite

This is a good suggestion. I don't find the rating loss frustrating but I think it may affect competitive balance by making more occasional duels players under-ranked vs their actual skill level.

yeah people have lives outside of geoguessr, this model isn't sustainable, its just going to make people irritated and not want to play

Exactly! I travel a lot and sometimes I'm away from home for 2-4 weeks. I don't play at that time, I go study metas irl ;) I don't want to come back home to the not so nice surprise of having lost 100+ hard earned elo

I agree! Or at least make it so that the "3 days" are not dependent on when in the day I played my last duel. It's frustrating having to keep track of day AND hour...just lost some of my rating because I was 1 hour late!
